Dr. Esther Miedema is a senior lecturer in the MSc International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Netherlands, and director of the UvA/AISSR centre Social Sciences for Global Health (SSGH).

She obtained her doctorate from the Institute of Education, University College London, in 2013. Before this, she worked for, among other organisations, UNESCO (Indonesia, the Philippines and Mozambique), the International Bureau of Education (UNESCO/IBE, Geneva) and the NGO International Child Development Initiatives (the Netherlands). Esther has obtained numerous collaborative research grants, including from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the German Research Foundation, Liliane Foundation, the Nuffic Orange Knowledge Programme, and Oxfam Novib.

Drawing on feminist theories and methodologies, Esther focuses on reproductive and sexual health and justice, and planetary and interspecies health. Esther’s work has been published in, among other journals, Allegralab, Health Education, Culture, Health and SexualitiesWhiteness and Education, and Progress in Development Studies.
