Frederike Kooiman
- PhD Candidate (SPRINGS Project)
Frederike is currently pursuing her PhD at AIGHD under the supervision of Vanessa Harris and Wieger Voskuijl. She is investigating the effect of climate change on the burden of diarrheal disease as part of the SPRINGS project. Her research aims to improve our understanding of the relationships between climate change hazards such as increased precipitation, flooding and droughts, and diarrheal disease. She will examine how the climate influences exposure to specific pathogens and assess potential interventions to mitigate this exposure and reduce vulnerabilities. The research focuses on 4 specific locations: Naples, Italy; Timisoara, Romania; Accra, Ghana; and Haydom, Tanzania.
Before joining AIGHD, Frederike obtained her MSc in Global Health at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. She specialized in Disaster Risk Management and conducted an epidemiological study of a recent malaria outbreak in Zanzibar, Tanzania for her Master’s thesis. She obtained her BSc at Amsterdam University College where she studied a combination of global health, biomedical science and geographic information systems (GIS).
Frederike has a strong interest in environmental health, particularly the intersection between climate change and infectious disease epidemiology. She enjoys visualizing global health data on maps and applying GIS methods to global health problems.
