Remko van Leeuwen is an entrepreneurial MD PhD in life sciences with >30 years of both industrial and academic experience as project leader, business developer and lobbyist. He has a proven track record in the full range of pharmaceutical product development from early discovery to clinical validation. Remko’s focus is on product development for infectious diseases and more specifically on diseases that lack a traditional market incentive for development. This includes neglected infectious diseases, vaccine research as well as the development of novel antibiotics.
Currently, Remko leads the business development team from AIGHD. He has also coordinated various international vaccines development projects on behalf of AIGHD. This included the EU funded African-US-EU HOOKVAC consortium, the world’s only consortium developing a vaccine for human hookworm disease. Furthermore, he headed the EU funded HIP program to foster EU/India collaboration on poverty-related diseases vaccines, and the India/EU-funded INDIGO project on affordable influenza vaccine development, targeted to improve the protection against influenza of people living in low- and middle-income countries. Finally, he heads the secretariat of the European Global Health Research Institutes Network (EGHRIN), a network of 22 leading Global Health research institutions in Europe to promote and advocate for Global Health research and innovation.
