Dr. Winny Koster is a medical anthropologist with a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2003). She has 40 years of experience in health-related programs in sub-Saharan Africa, both Francophone and Anglophone, and in South and Southeast Asia. She worked as a program coordinator, evaluator, researcher and trainer, for national ministries of health and national and international NGOs as a staff member, associate and independent consultant. She was assistant lecturer at the University of Amsterdam from 2002 to 2012, postdoc at AIGHD from 2012-2015 and senior researcher at Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) from 2016-2020. Since 1992, most of her work focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including multi-country, mixed-methods programme evaluations and quantitative and qualitative applied research. SRHR topics include maternal health; HIV and AIDS; SRHR providers including traditional birth attendants; health care systems and quality; prevention of unwanted pregnancy; induced abortion; infertility; adolescent and youth SRHR; child marriage; female genital mutilation; and gender-based violence. Her most recent research relates to medical laboratory systems in African countries.
