Schokland

Description

This project received funding from the Schokland fund, which provides grants to consortia of Dutch companies and institutions that can contribute to a quicker realization of the international Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

This project aims at strengthening the capacity and knowledge with regard to international property rights (IPR) strategies and attitudes of scientists and research organizations in the South and the North, notably African research centres and Dutch Technological Top Institutes (TTI’s) and university research centres in order to enable them to develop sustainable cooperation relationships in their joint task  to contribute to the realization of the MDG. In the short term this knowledge can be applied for the improvement of equal transfer of agricultural and medical knowledge, thus for the realization of (some) of the MDGs, such as MDG 1 and MDG 6.

In the long term, the project should contribute to the enhancement and strengthening of the legal South-North infrastructure on IPR as such, and the context within which the IPR’s have to function.

This project consists of three interlinked pilots, of which the AIGHD carries out pilot 2 (the development of an Affordable Resistance Test for Africa (ARTA) and its IP challenges). In the first two pilots, already existing R&D&I agenda’s of North-South relationships will be supplemented by research with regard to the changes and consequences of (lack of knowledge of) IPR for technology transfer and research programming. Further, concrete plans will be developed for specific IP strategies enabling TTI’s and North-South university research centers to contribute to the realization of the MDG’s.
