AIGHD and JLI mourn the death of Kirby Institute director, Prof. David Cooper

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing last weekend, in Sydney, Australia, of Professor David Cooper. “David stood tall amongst us, not only literally, but also as one of the giants of HIV research and medicine. He leaves a huge and important legacy to our field,” said Peter Reiss, professor at the Academic Medical center and the AIGHD. “In the Netherlands we’ll always remember collaborating with David and his team on early clinical trials of new and dual nucleosides, on the very first trials with nevirapine, on collaborative cohort research like D:A:D, and of course, together with Professors Praphan Phanuphak and Joep Lange, as co-founder of the HIV Netherlands-Australia-Thailand research collaboration, HIV-NAT, in Bangkok. The three of them shared a passion to build research capacity in resource-constrained parts of the world, always with the aim to deliver optimal HIV prevention and care for those in need.”

We extend our sincerest condolences to Prof. Cooper’s family, friends and colleagues.
