About Alberto Garcia-Basteiro:
Alberto Garcia-Basteiro currently coordinates the TB research unit at the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM), Mozambique and at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, ISGlobal in Barcelona, Spain. He was trained as a physician at University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) in Spain and completed his residency in preventative medicine and public health at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona. He received a Master´s Degree of Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). During his medical specialization, he participated in different research projects and clinical trials in poverty-related diseases. The tuberculosis (TB) research unit at CISM is involved in several large observational studies and clinical trials which contribute to the development of new tools to fight TB, in particular new diagnostics evaluations and drug clinical trials. Dr. Garcia-Basteiro’s interests include the study of the burden of TB disease in different vulnerable populations and characterization of the disease at multiple levels including clinical, microbiological and social. He has received several prizes including the 2017 Union Young Scientific Prize awarded by the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
