Yvo Roos

Yvo Roos is professor of acute neurology and as of January 2024 Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Amsterdam and Member of the Board of Directors of Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC), the largest University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Until last year, he was head of the Department of Neurology and Vice-Chairman of the Head and Neck division in the Amsterdam UMC. He was founder of the Acute Brain Care Unit (ABC-Unit) in 1996 which served as a blueprint for acute stroke care management, including acute CT-scanning and thrombolysis, in the Netherlands. He was Co-PI of the MRCLEAN trial (NEJM 2015), the pivotal trial on endovascular treatment for ischemic stroke patients, Co-PI of the MRCLEAN Registry; PI of the MRCLEAN No-IV trial (NEJM 2021) within the CONTRAST consortium; executive committee member of HERMES, pooling 7 RCT’s on endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke and Co-PI of the Chinese DIRECT MT trial (NEJM 2020). He is Chairman of StrokeNet (regional stroke care optimization) and Research leader of the Dutch Heart Foundation-funded ‘Circulating Nano Traces to Identify the Cause of Stroke’ (CINTICS), a research collaboration of the University of Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology, the University of Leiden and the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Together with prof Aad vd Lugt, radiologist, he is project leader of the CONTRAST consortium, the largest public – private funded research consortium on stroke research.
With the MRCLEAN co-PI’s, he has won several prestigious prizes and awards – i.e. the Science and Innovation Award from the Dutch Federation of Medical Specialists and the Excellence and Innovation Award CIRSE (2017). In 2020 they won the Winkler Medal of the Dutch Neurology Society. He has (co-)authored over 450 papers (H-index of 71).
