Text messaging to decrease tuberculosis treatment attrition in TB-HIV co-infection in Uganda

In this non-randomized study in Kampala, Uganda, we implemented an SMS reminder service to help TB patients to remember to take their drugs and to offer them a line of communication to the clinic. The service was rated highly by the participants but was underpowered to show an effect on short-term risk of loss to follow-up. The study further highlights important technological barriers that have implications for larger scale implementation, not only for TB but also other disease modalities.
